Greatest ever British Sportsman/Woman?
Put forward on BBC today.
Ignoring the fact he wasn't born here, is he our greatest ever?

Athletics, swimming and cycling now so tainted with drugs and cheating that it's hard to believe any of the world's great athletes in these sports are clean.

Maybe Mo Farah is a great athlete, maybe not. His coach, Salazar, is a known drugs cheat so there is a whiff of suspicion there.

It takes a leap of faith to believe Salazar was pumping drugs into his other athletes but not Farah.

On a related topic, I am always surprised when there is news of footballers missing drugs tests. Why bother testing footballers? There is no such thing as a performance enhancing drug in football.

Ludicrously, Rio was banned for 6 months for missing a drugs test when it was suspected he had used cocaine. Cocaine is a performance damaging drug ffs!

And in answer to the OP, there is only candidate : Bobby Moore. Football is our national sport and until another player lifts the World Cup - the most prestigious trophy in world sport - for England Bobby will always have that title unopposed.

Sebastian Coe. How long did his 800 world record last? 20 years?

Agree. CB Fry for me too.
Represented England in football and cricket, broke the long jump record AND played rugby for the Barbarians.

Didnt just run.

Re: Mo Farah - Greatest Ever?

Redgrave was a passenger for 3 of his gold medals, not even in the top 10 British athletes let alone all sports.

1. Daley
2. Bobby Moore
3. Jessica Ennis-Hill or Akabusi's lunch box

There must have been a darts or snooker player equally illustrious in their field, though it would seem odd putting a darts player above a multi Olympic champion as the greatest sportsman.

What about the rarely mentioned "Long Fellow" Lester Piggott? Winning races for 37 years, but his greatest achievement was surely racing at 8 stone despite being 5' 8".

Unless he was up against Coe!!!

That Moscow Olympics was unbelievable. Both won the race that the other was expected to win. Coe the 800 world record holder and Ovett wins it and Ovett unbeaten in the 1500 for something like two years and Coe won it.

Can't remember how many world records the two broke but not sure if it was 800 or 1500 metres but they broke it twice each in 8 days or something stupid like that. Both unbelievable runners.

You do not know your born.

Not a Talent ?

What do you think footballers do for 60% of the game.

Do you know what a battery is Ridikzappa well Mo Farah is a duracell most top world footballers at best would be a cheap 99p shop battery.
Running gently is a talent that would help you survive in very harsh conditions kicking a football which is by far my favourite sport would not help one little bit.

Steve Ovett fantastic, when he kicked for last 100m race over.

Re: Mo Farah - Greatest Ever?
Superb athlete and deserves massive credit for his titles in major championships but I still think that world records make you great.

Maybe I have rose tinted spectacles on but that time when Coe and Ovett were swapping world records between them every few days was the stuff of legend. God only knows what the two would have achieved if they both had not suffered with illness and injury.

Plus I think I've always considered the 800 and 1500 the big events compared to the 5000 and 10000. Not taking anything away from Mo though, a top, top athlete.

He is not British.

I don't think running at a gentle pace for a long time should be considered any sort of talent worthy of note.

He is a great, great athlete and he runs for Britain. He is a national treasure, even if a few negative cunts on WHO disagree for reasons they themselves know about.

He is from Somali and uses illegal enhancement drugs?

Re: Mo Farah - Greatest Ever?
No he's not our greatest ever sportsman. He's British in the same way Kevin Pieterson is English. Even if he wasn't Somalian, he still wouldn't be the greatest sportsman we've ever had. On the plus side, he does seem like a nice chap, hes is a great runner, and he makes middle class people feel all warm and fluffy inside. So that's nice.

Re: Mo Farah - Greatest Ever?
The amount of training he does would kill most people. Mile after mile of road work every day plus other exercises with weights etc. He has worked for everything he gets.

He is a great, great athlete and he runs for Britain. He is a national treasure, even if a few negative cunts on WHO disagree for reasons they themselves know about.

When he was at the new West Ham stadium for the anniversary games, the entire stadium was on its feet cheering him home, including me..

Re: Mo Farah - Greatest Ever?
Personally I think he was and is sensational. For me in my lifetime he is undoubtably out best track and field athlete. Greatest sportsman ever; that's a tough call. Chris Hoy and Regrave will push him close.

The racist comments on here are embarrassing if I'm honest. Secretly I bet they were all cheering for him.

Re: Mo Farah - Greatest Ever?
Sometimes I cannot believe that West Ham fans can be such utter cnuts but judging by some of the obviously racist comments they are, and 100% too.

I have no problem with people not agreeing that he is the greatest British sportsman but to belittle what he has achieved is shit and stupid beyond belief.
